The Music Conservatory Opens in Big Pine Key, Bringing Quality Music Education to the Florida Keys
New Big Pine Key music school offers lessons and classes for children, teens and adults throughout the Lower Florida Keys
The sound of music is growing in the Florida Keys.
The Music Conservatory is opening its new location in Big Pine Key, Florida, bringing professional music instruction, private lessons, group classes and community-based music education to families throughout the Lower Keys.
Located at 30338 Overseas Highway in Big Pine Key, The Music Conservatory is ideally situated to serve students from Big Pine Key, Summerland Key, Cudjoe Key, Ramrod Key, Little Torch Key, Sugarloaf Key, Marathon, Key West and surrounding Florida Keys communities.
Big Pine Key is located between Marathon and Key West and serves as an important community center within the Lower Keys. That makes it a natural home for a music school designed not simply for one neighborhood, but for students throughout this unique island community.
Music Lessons in Big Pine Key for Children and Adults
The Music Conservatory believes that quality music education should be available to everyone—from a young child experiencing music for the first time to an adult who has dreamed for years about finally learning an instrument.
The new Big Pine Key location will provide opportunities for students to study piano, guitar, violin, voice, ukulele, drums and more, with instruction available for beginning through advanced musicians.
Students will have opportunities to participate in private music lessons and group music classes, allowing families to choose the learning environment that works best for them.
For young beginners, the Conservatory's goal is to make those first musical experiences positive, exciting and educational. Students can develop a foundation in rhythm, music reading, listening, technique and performance while discovering the simple joy of making music.
Adults are equally welcome.
Whether you've never touched an instrument, played years ago and would like to begin again, or are an experienced musician looking to improve your skills, The Music Conservatory in Big Pine Key is being built as a place where people of different ages and musical backgrounds can learn together.
Serving Big Pine Key, Summerland Key, Cudjoe Key and the Lower Keys
One of the most exciting things about the new location is the opportunity to create a musical gathering place for the Lower Florida Keys.
The Lower Keys are a collection of distinct but closely connected island communities. Official Florida Keys tourism information describes the Lower Keys as stretching from the western end of the Seven Mile Bridge toward Stock Island, encompassing communities including Big Pine Key, Summerland Key, Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf Key and the neighboring islands.
The Conservatory hopes to serve students throughout that entire area.
Families searching for music lessons in Summerland Key will have a nearby option in Big Pine. Students from Cudjoe Key can travel up the Overseas Highway for lessons and classes. Families in Marathon looking for additional music-education opportunities can travel south to Big Pine, while students from Key West, Sugarloaf Key, Big Coppitt Key and Stock Island can travel north.
Our vision is simple:
Build a place where the musical community of the Florida Keys can come together.
More Than Just Music Lessons
The Music Conservatory is being developed around the idea that music education should be about more than learning songs.
Great music instruction teaches students to read, listen, create, perform and understand music.
It develops patience and concentration.
It gives children an opportunity to accomplish something difficult and discover that practice produces results.
It gives adults a creative outlet.
And perhaps most importantly, music brings people together.
That philosophy has guided The Music Conservatory from its beginning. Students aren't viewed simply as lesson appointments on a schedule. The goal is to develop musicians and create opportunities for students to experience the friendships, confidence and sense of belonging that can grow from making music with other people.
Experienced Music Education Comes to the Florida Keys
The Big Pine Key location is being established by musician, educator, producer, composer and author Joseph Glarner, founder of The Music Conservatory.
Glarner holds a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Music from Liberty University and has also studied at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, and Five Towns College, where his studies included jazz and commercial music.
His career has crossed many sides of the music profession—from classroom teaching and private instruction to jazz performance, church music, composition, recording, arranging and record production.
As a producer and recording musician, Glarner has spent years working with singers, songwriters and instrumentalists on countless recordings and albums. His experience in professional music production gives Conservatory students something especially valuable: an opportunity to learn from someone who understands both music education and the working music industry.
His educational work has included teaching music in schools as well as private and community music education. Over the years, students he has trained have gone on to pursue their own careers in music, including becoming professional musicians and music educators themselves.
Glarner is also an author of music instructional materials and continues to write and develop new music books and curricula for students and teachers.
Music, Church and Community
Church music has also been an important part of Glarner's musical life.
Years spent directing church music, accompanying worship, directing singers and working with congregations helped shape a philosophy that remains central to The Music Conservatory:
Music builds community.
When people sing, play and perform together, differences can disappear surprisingly quickly. Children make friends. Adults who may never otherwise have met find themselves playing music together. Congregations become active participants rather than audiences.
The Music Conservatory hopes to bring that same spirit of musical community to Big Pine Key and the Florida Keys.
Connecting Music Education From Big Pine Key to Key West
Glarner is also beginning a new chapter as the Music Teacher at The Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West, while establishing The Music Conservatory's new Big Pine Key location.
Together, those roles provide an exciting opportunity to contribute to music education throughout the Lower Keys—from school classrooms in Key West to private and group music instruction in Big Pine Key.
The objective isn't simply to open another lesson studio.
It is to invest in music education in the Florida Keys.
That means helping a preschooler discover rhythm.
Helping an elementary student play a first song on the piano.
Helping a teenager prepare for an audition.
Helping a church musician improve his or her skills.
Helping an adult finally learn guitar.
And perhaps someday watching a young student who began taking lessons in Big Pine Key grow up to become a professional musician or music teacher.
We've seen that happen before.
We'd love to see it happen in the Florida Keys.
